Dr. Nicolas Oddone is a subspecialized general surgeon whose main interest is thyroid surgery (endocrine surgery). He focuses on using minimally invasive approaches for thyroid and parathyroid surgery, as well as surgical oncology.

Dr. Nicolas Oddone has extensively researched modern anatomical approaches for minimally invasive thyroid surgery. The topic ultimately served as the basis of his master’s degree dissertation, “Transoral Video Assisted Thyroidectomy: Anatomical Principles and Rationalisation of Surgical Technique,” which he presented to the John Lowenthal Scientific Society. Dr. Nicolas Oddone earned his Master of Surgery in Endocrine Surgery from the University of Sydney.

Additionally, Dr. Oddone has penned publications regarding the thyroid, such as “Tiroiditis Aguda Supurada [Acute suppurative thyroiditis]”, an article he co-wrote with Prof. G. Rodríguez. He continues to supplement his own knowledge by taking professional development courses.

Years of Postgraduate Fellowship Training

Dr. Nicolas Oddone completed a two-week Bariatric Mini Fellowship at John Flynn Private Hospital in Gold Coast, Queensland in July 2009. In June 2010 he completed a Sutureless Thyroidectomy Course held by Harmonic Focus in Sydney, Australia. Later, in 2012, Dr Oddone completed a MIVAT (Minimally Invasive Video Assisted Thyroidectomy) Mini fellowship in Pisa, Italy.

Dr. Nicolas Oddone regularly collaborates with other peers who specialize in thyroid surgery. He has attended special conferences regarding his interest, including the Australian Endocrine Surgeons’ Bi Annual Meeting in Melbourne, Australia in June 2014, and the 6th Multidisciplinary Update on Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery held in Noosa, Queensland.

Among his many organizational memberships, Dr Nicolas Oddone is part of the Australian and New Zealand Endocrine Surgeons, the Obesity Society of Australia and New Zealand (OSSANZ), and the Endocrine Surgery Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Dr. Nicolas Oddone has taken courses and attended top international conferences regarding obesity management, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, clinical nutrition, nutritional therapy, and much more.

An avid researcher to this day, Dr. Nicolas Oddone earned his MD at Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Once Dr. Nicolas Oddone finished his general surgery training at the prestigious Maciel Hospital, in Montevideo. He was later appointed Assistant Professor in Surgery and guided students and surgical trainees in the beginning of their career. During this tenure Dr. Nicolas Oddone also completed a 12 month fellowship in UpperGI surgery. Focusing on the critically ill patient and Hydatid liver disease.

He subsequently gained international experience; he completed a 12 month Hepatobiliary Surgery Fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide. He then underwent 2 years of postgraduate fellowship training in Head and Neck surgery and Surgical Oncology at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre at Westmead Hospital.

Always pursuing further research interest he completed a Master of Surgery at the University of Sydney in 2015.
